Behind the Fence

Behind the Fence In November 2003 I started my army service in the I.D.F - Israeli Defense Force and was part of the 932 Nahal unit, one of the combat units in the army. In the military, I suppose like everywhere else, time gets divided into two main parts, good and bad. My army service went on for 3 years so there are plenty of memories from that period. The book, Behind the Fence follows the story of my platoon during the 2006 war between Israel and the Hezbollah inside Lebanon. The story as well as following  our army operations during the war additionally follows the thoughts, the fears and the strong friendship between the soldiers while focusing on what it's like to not just go into war for your country but to do so while your best friends are right beside you.

Blurb from book's back cover

“You will never read a more personal, moving, direct, compassionate account of war in the Middle East.

Australian/Israeli soldier, 22 year-old kibbutznik Danny Morris, is wounded in battle during the savage 2006 campaign against the entrenched Hezbollah.

What starts for a platoon of best friends as a one-day cross-border skirmish escalates for Morris into a fight for his country, his life, and ultimately his battle with himself to make sense of the horror he and his friends survived when so many others did not.

Morris sets down one soldier’s actions, thoughts, feelings, fears and fearlessness. Simple. Forthright. And with searing honesty, no heroics, no hyperbole. Just an Israeli kid’s eternity: a few days war in Lebanon.”
